Your Questions About Kayaking Gear

George asks…

Kayaking on major rivers?

My friend and I want to start taking some kayaking trips down some of the local rivers in our region (Specifically the Willamette around Portland, Oregon) I wanted to know if there were any factors that would prevent us from doing so. Would we need boating licenses? Certain gear?

Brad Selers answers:

Watch for large watercraft, their wakes can be troublesome.

You will need PFD's, spray skirts, and maps of the rivers.

The boats will need to be registered.

Have fun

Susan asks…

getting into kayaking?

It's safe to say that I've recently become addicted to kayaking, even though I've never been... so I'm dying to go, of course. My question is, what do I need to started? Like a checklist of stuff (besides a kayak obviously)... and what I should look for when buying gear and stuff.
Thanks so much!

Brad Selers answers:

This is just the very basics on the types of gear you'll need to think about as you get started paddling.

Kayak
Choosing the right kayak

Paddle
Kayak paddles are important, and shouldn't be treated as an afterthought. Buy the best paddle you can afford, as it makes a tremendous difference to your comfort and enjoyment. Things to consider:
Length - Paddle lengths vary greatly. The persons height will affect the length to choose, as will the type of boat being paddled. In general, whitewater paddles will be shorter, varying in length from about 180 cm to 205 cm, and touring paddles from 210-240 cm. A wider kayak also dictates a longer paddle, such as some types of sit-on-tops or tandem kayaks. Many good kayak shops will allows demos on paddles, and it's highly suggested that you try them before you buy.
Material - 1 )Very inexpensive paddles will have a metal shaft and plastic blades. While inexpensive and durable, paddles like this typically have inefficient blade shapes and are heavy. 2) Paddles with fiberglass shafts and resin or plastic blades can offer a good value for the money, and are good backup or spare paddles. They typically have good blade shapes, but are a little heavy. 3) Fiberglass paddles (blades and shaft) are perhaps the best value for the money. They have efficient shapes and low weight, with good durability.
4) Carbon-fiber or Graphite paddles are a premium choice. The feel is similar to fiberglass, but very light weight. Some have a foam core to the blade, which offers buoyancy and really nice feel in the water.
5) Wood paddles vary a lot, from cheap and heavy, to sophisticated and light weight. They typically have some flex to them that gives them a lively feel.

Blade shape and size - the total area of the paddle blade is important. A larger area will give more bite, and power, but require more energy. Again, it's best to demo several and decide what feels right to you.

PFD (Personal Flotation Device)
Sometimes referred to as a "life jacket" this is the most important piece of safety gear you'll ever buy.
The most important characteristic of a PFD is fit. Try on as many as you can, and find the best fit. To test, put the PFD on will all the adjustment straps fully loosened. Pull down on the PFD, then start tightening the straps from the bottom first. They should be snug, but not restrictive. Once all the straps are tightened on the sides, remove any slack from the shoulder straps. Then, put your thumbs under the shoulder straps and pull up. The PFD should remain in place on your torso. If it rides up, try tightening the straps, or another PFD.
Simulate paddling movements, including turns, rolls, etc. Make sure the PFD doesn't bind or get in the way.
Once fit is established, your choices are primarily personal preference. Pockets and other accessories are nice, but should be considered secondary to fit.
Class I,II,III,IV,V - These Coast Guard ratings are seen on most PFD's sold in the US and group PFD's by type. Most kayak PFD's are Type III or V. For a full explanation of types, click here.

Helmets
Mandatory for whitewater paddlers, and sea kayakers dealing with surf or paddling in rocky areas.
Fit - Once again, fit is very important. Most helmets will come with foam fit kits that will allow you to customize the fit. Once adjusted, the helmet should remain in place even if you shake your head vigorously in any direction.
Coverage - Some helmets are very low profile, and offer minimal protection. Others cover the ears, and some even have face or chin guards. You should buy a helmet with the most coverage you are comfortable with.
Materials - Helmets come in both plastic and composite (fiberglass or composite). Composite helmets will tend to be light and stiff, but plastic helmets offer good value for the money. Unfortuantely, there is no certification process for helmets, so evaluating their integrity is nearly impossible.

Shoes
Choose shoes that will protect your feet, and stay on your feet if you swim. Most paddling shoes will drain quickly. It's never recommend to paddle barefoot, in an emergency bare feet can be a liability. In cold conditions, use neoprene booties or thin neoprene socks under shoes. In warm conditions, sandals or thin water shoes work well.

Clothing
Dress for immersion. If you end up in the water, cold water can sap strength in minutes, so it's important to dress for the conditions. In poor conditions or if paddling alone, dress even warmer. In many parts of the world, where air temperatures can be warm while the water is cold, this can be tricky and lead you to overheat while paddling. Remember, when kayaking, you can almost always cool down by entering the water. If you get cold, it's very difficult to warm up, so it's best to always err on the side of being overdressed. Layering is best, so you can adjust if conditions change.
Wetsuits are warm and great for insulation in the water, but are restrictive and don't breath much when not in the water. They are good for situations (like classes or practice) where you will be in the water a lot, or for beginning whitewater kayakers who might be swimming frequently.
Splash tops and Dry tops are waterproof tops that protect you from splashes and water. Dry tops have latex seals at the neck and wrists that seal water completely out.
Fleece and synthetic wicking layers allow you to adjust your warmth.
Avoid: Avoid cotton. Cotton, when wet, saps heat away and will keep you cold for a long time.

Skirts
The skirt is used to seal out water from the cockpit on a traditional kayak. They are necessary in all but very calm conditions. Neoprene skirts offer the best water proofing, with nylon skirts offering better breathability. Many nice sea kayaking skirts are a combination of the two, with a neoprene deck and a nylon tunnel.

Nancy asks…

Winter kayaking maintenance what do i do?

i for the first time will be kayaking in the winter up here in the boston ma area. i already have my drysuits with my insulating undergarments and other safety gear. but i neglected one aspect of cold water kayaking, what type of maintenance do i need to perform on the kayak to keep it operating properly in freezing water, in particular what should i do to make sure my rudder along with the cables continues to operate properly rather than freeze up, my kayak does not track well and i need the rudder, im afraid the cold water will cause it to freeze and to malfunction or even break what can i do about this

Brad Selers answers:

Lubricate the rudder assembly with Boeshield T-9. You can get it at REI (it's with the bike lubricants) and in some regular marine boating supply shops. It's a lubricant developed by Boeing for use in aircraft -- it's very weather and salt-water resistant and doesn't harm plastics or rubber. Buy the squeeze bottle rather than the spray can -- runs about $9. I've used it for 8 years on the frames of my folding kayaks and the rudders of all of my boats to prevent salt-water corrosion. Good stuff.

Of course, year round you should always wash off the salt water with fresh water after paddling. In cool weather (or even when I am feeling lazy in the summer) I just go to a coin op car wash and hose the kayaks down right on the car (skip the wax cycle.)

Laura asks…

advice for a kayaking newbie?

i am an outdoors person and i want to start doing river trips. i need a kayak that i can load up with with a weeks worth of food and gear and just go, but i do not want to spend $2000 on some crazy kayak with a rudder and i do not want anything over 10 feet long, any advice on a certain kayak that would be best????? it needs to be a kayak that can carry me and my gear and still be functional in serious water, anddddddddddddd no i am not going to use a canoe because kayaks are way easier to control and you can do more in them.

Brad Selers answers:

Get a flotation device, put a cooler on it, pack all stuff in a water proof bag.. Tie it all down and hope it pans out...

The Interesting History of Kayaks and the Sport of Kayaking

The first kayaks were created thousands of years ago by arctic inhabitants now known as the Intuits. These early indigenous people, formerly known as Eskimos, inhabited areas of Greenland, the northeastern point of Russia, Alaska, and the uppermost regions of Canada. Early Eskimos made kayak frames using driftwood, and early kayaks were wrapped in sealskins. Early kayaks were virtually unsinkable with air-filled seal bladders. These early kayaks were used during summer months primarily for hunting and fishing. The word "kayak" literally means "hunters' boat."

Early kayak design varied according to the specific needs of inhabitants of particular regions. For instance, early kayaks designed by inhabitants surrounding the Bering Straight created wider, shorter kayaks. This kayak design provided a large area for storing game and supplies, and it was more stable on rough water than the longer more slender kayaks designed for speed by the Aleuts. Kayaks were designed to remain upright on rough waters, and the design of the kayak enabled kayak users to right themselves if turned over by rough frigid waters that would otherwise prove deadly in an open craft.

Europeans eventually discovered the versatility of the kayak, and kayaks once designed with sealskins were designed by Europeans with fabric covers. In 1905 a German inventor named Hans Klepper eventually purchased a design for a folding canvas kayak from a German student. He called this kayak a "foldboat." Klepper began selling this early version of the folding kayak, and kayaks once used primarily for navigation and hunts by indigenous people were now being used for sport.

In 1936, kayak racing became a part of the Olympic games in Berlin. Kayaks were used in an event called "flatwater racing." Kayak clubs began developing all over Europe, and kayaks became more and more popular as time went by.

The 1950's brought the development of the fiberglass kayak, and a company known as Valley Products began producing the first fiberglass kayak. This fiberglass kayak was known as "Anas Acuta." Valley Products went on to design another kayak called the "Nordkapp." This model could handle more cargo while remaining tight and maneuverable. Just as early Eskimos designed kayaks, modern kayak designers also designed kayaks according to regional needs and preferences.

Plastic kayaks were introduced in the 1980's, and kayaks continue to become lighter, sturdier, and more versatile. Now there are several types of kayaks designed with various materials suitable for a variety of sporting events. Those who love the sport of kayaking have more choices now than ever before.

Your Questions About Kayaking Terms

William asks…

Threading size for an AR-15 stock?

Original: "I'm working on the design of a side folding stock for a small rifle, this way it will be more compact for use with long term backpacking and kayaking. I plan on using a spare stock for a rifle and reworking an AR-15 side folding adapter in. What I would like to know is what are the threading measurements on an AR-15 stock.

And just to let you see, this is the adapter in question http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B002TUSDQ2/sr=1-8/qid=1269325751/ref=dp_image_z_0?ie=UTF8&n=3375251&s=sporting-goods&qid=1269325751&sr=1-8 . It is designed for the AR to AK adaption, but that part is of no concern in this particular project.

A top answer WILL be chosen. Thank you for your time."

Ok, so apparently when I asked this NO ONE could understand that this is NOT for an AR-15 of any sort. This hinge http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B002TUSDQ2/sr=1-8/qid=1269325751/ref=dp_image_z_0?ie=UTF8&n=3375251&s=sporting-goods&qid=1269325751&sr=1-8 goes into this http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AKS165-6.html . So now that you understand, I hope that you will answer the question. What is the thread size? If you don't know the answer, then please don't try to answer. Like I said, this is NOT for an AR-15, and I'm fully aware of Stoner's buffer tube.

Thank you and have a great day.

Brad Selers answers:

Go to www.midwayusa.com and search for ar-15 tap. They have one for $69.99 and it tells the thread diameter and pitch. For some reason that seems like a better answer than giving you the numbers. You could probably go to brownells and find one too.

Laura asks…

If you wanted a pack of dogs......?

i am going too have 8 hunting dogs. a- because i love dogs like chips and b- i love hunting with good hunting breeds.
i have 7 picked out already.
i only want versatile breeds.
i already have selected:
black and tan coon hound
walker coon hound
red bone coon hound
blue tick coon hound

weimaraner
german short haired pointer
vizsla
?

i want the eighth to be very special in terms of temperament. i want it to still be a versatile hunting dog- able to hunt deer, upland game birds, mabe coon, fox, and rabbit. i do not prefer single duty dogs due to the fact that I want my pack to always hunt together or at least be of some use during each hunt. (pointers with coon hounds when coon hunting and coon hounds with pointers when bird hunting) i will be able to afford great training in order to do this. i will be hunting mostly deer, coon, and quail with hounds and pointers.

one more dog and my pack is complete. most of my selected dogs are almost hyper-which i prefer due to my own energy. i want one dog to be able to go with me kayaking. with him being calm and controlled kayaking with me.

for number 8-my kayaking and versatile hunting dog- i am thinking about a breed of setter or english pointer.

if you were to choose one obedient but still very energetic versatile hunting dog capable of hunting deer, quail, and coon, and able to stay with you on a kayak what breed of hunting dog would you choose?

Brad Selers answers:

Hi iymle, I can see why the idea of versatility would appeal to you. It's sounds good in theory, but I don't think it's feasible to put into practice. You MAY be able to find one or two special individuals, that could successfully hunt more than one species... But, for what your describing, I agree with dan & others, that a Labrador retriever would most likely be your best choice...

There is a reason that most dogs are single duty. Each breed has different instincts, characteristics & abilities. That's what makes them ideal for hunting one particular species... Most of them have been bred for a specific purpose... Careful breeding has enhanced their natural abilities, which are genetically inherent to their breed. I don't want to seem critical in anyway, but the idea of taking a bird dog, coon hunting & a coon dog, bird hunting, does not make very good sense to me...

Here's why... 1st of all, if you want your dog to be the best at something, you will have to work with him, doing the same thing over a period of time, for him to master it.... Trying to teach him to hunt something different, than what he's bred for, will only confuse the dog... & probably mess him up for hunting any one thing well.

Any coon hunter will tell you that the WORST thing a coon dog can do is get started running deer... Likewise with a rabbit dog. Bird dogs are what they are, because THEY have that pointing instinct! But, it still take LOTS of training, to enhance their natural instincts & make them a REALLY GOOD bird dog. They don't just come ready made... You have to teach them, to HOLD, once they have locked on a bird... You have to teach them not to creep or flush the bird... In order to have time to get there & shoot it. They have a very soft mouths, just made for retrieving. Still most need some training, to be good retrievers.

Ok, now picture your in the field bird hunting & your best dog's on point. Your working your way to him, to get a shot at the bird... Then out of the blue comes one of your coon/deer/rabbit dogs & he runs right through the point, flushing & chasing the bird. That messes up your bird dog. For one thing your bird dog is gonna get an attitude & he's gonna wanna chase the bird too... This can become a BAD habit in bird dogs.

Ok, now imagine your coon hunting & your hounds are treed... Your bird dog will be of no help at all... For one, most don't bark much... & he will only want to find birds.... If he is interested in the coon, he would not be much use fighting the coon & would probably get torn apart.

Coon dogs/hounds have a natural instinct for tracking/chasing & killing the coon... But even they usually need years of training to make them a GREAT coon dog. Hounds usually work better in pairs or packs... But, you should never, ever, run your fox hound or deer hound with your coon hound... You would absolutely ruin him! It's VERY BAD for a coon dog to run a deer & totally screws up the whole hunt. You can however, train a hound to run coon, fox or deer. Just not all three together. You would never know what they(the dogs) or you were hunting????? LOL

Do you see my point? I'm not saying it's impossible, just a bad idea. It really defeats the whole purpose, of breeding fine dogs to do a specific job & allow them to be the very best at it!

I just don't think it would work. I think it will MESS up ALL your dogs... Probably to the point, that they couldn't even do the kind of hunting that they were designed or bred to do. I hate to seem critical, but that is my opinion. Which is also based on my own experiences with dogs.

The whole point of buying these fine breeds, is because they are the best at what they do! These dogs love doing what they are made for... That's what they live for!!! Don't try to make them into something they are not... Let them be the best at what they do.... That's where the real fun & satisfaction really comes in, both for you & them.

In the past, my Labs, have probably been most versatile. They will retrieve waterfowl & can be taught to sit still in a boat(don't think that's gonna be easy with a pointer/setter or hound) They(Labs) can & will track a wounded deer. They are great companion dogs!!! They do like to go along, on almost any kind of hunting, but they SHOULD stay by your side. I've even seen one who pointed(well kinda) at rabbits & quail, but then would give chase...

But, I have never seen a more beautiful site (or a happier dog) then my Lab, coming though the swamp/marsh (having to swim some, climb over obstacles & then swim some more), with a gorgeous duck hanging out both sides of her butter soft mouth Then placing it gently in my hand. NO dog has ever been more loyal, made me prouder or feel more loved, than my Lab.... The Labrador Retriever is truly, one of the world's best dogs!!!!!

Ken asks…

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

In the past three months I had to brushes with almost taking life and almost dying.

I was out running armed like normal and a random dude in a sweat shirt turns around with a gun in his hand and points it at me. I go for my pistol, move off the X it comes out of the holster, I realize it was a thirteen year old kid with an airsoft gun. If I had zipped the kid I would have been in the right even after I realized it was an airsoft gun.

I was out kayaking ending up being an idiot ditching my kayak three miles off shore when I was exhuasted, decided I could swim in. Realized I was screwed, it was getting dark, no one knew I was out there. For some odd reason I was carrying my cell phone I NEVER carry my cell phone when I kayak. I ended getting rescued by the coast guard.

I sometimes get panic attacks when I'm out running in the dark in my neighborhood (for some reason I have the feeling I'm out there all alone like I was in the middle of the water), I have sleeping problems, eating problems, I can't concentrate at work, and I have actually been crying a few times in the past week. Both of these events happened over two months ago. I think I'm coming to terms with how close these things were.
I also have bad anger problems. I put my fist through the shower.

Brad Selers answers:

As the light changed from red to green to yellow and back to red again, I sat there thinking about life. Was it nothing more than a bunch of honking and yelling? Sometimes it seemed that way.

Lizzie asks…

Trying to figure out if my friend likes me more than that?

A pretty good friend of mine for around 4 years now. We're high school seniors. I've noticed that recently she's gotten a bit more "into me."
*We've been kayaking and skiing together for a few times now.
*We kind of make up for what each other lacks in terms of personality and skills , and she's said things like "Together we make a whole person." We both commonly use the phrase "Where would you be without me?" with each other.
*We jokingly "insult" each other and laugh about it and afterward she goes "love ya (my name) playfully.
*She's asked me to go to the beach last week. I couldn't make it, but she asked me again this week and seems really into the idea.
*She also mentioned visiting me at college when we leave in the fall.
*We're going to prom together too. (When I asked her in October, it was "just friends," but when I didn't mentioned it for a few months come April she asks me again to make sure.)
*I'm doing a building project and she drew up the plans for me. I asked how long it took, and she said about 4.5 hours. She said "Well, other people are going to be looking at it, and it was for you, and I wanted to get it right."
*She heard my sister talking to someone and she says "Is that your sister? She has your voice."

Are these thew signs of normal friendship or does she have a bit of a crush?
Because I'm starting to like her now because of this trend. It's like I have no control over it. And I don't want to have a crush on her because I don't want to lose the friendship if something happens.

But I don't want to ask because I actually had a longtime crush on a mutual friend of ours and when I told that friend, it didn't go well. So if I tell her now, I'm worried that I'm going to look shallow for liking two of my best female-friends.

Sorry for the long explanation, but these things are complicated!

Brad Selers answers:

The girl probably said no to you because she knows the other one is into you.

MAN UP ALREADY.

Go find the girl you want and kiss her. Don't mess it up by talking. If she kisses back, end your friendship and date her. If she doesn't kiss you back and looks weird at you, tell her sorry but you had to know for sure.

At least a woman could respect that on some level. What you are doing currently is weak.

Brad Selers answers:

I wouldn't kayak, I would go on a cruise and see other places before you come here.

But if a kayak is the only way remember to pack lots of healthy snacks and a gun to shoot the sharks that have been eating people around this area.

Have fun with the trip, can't wait to see you. Maybe one day I can repay the kayaking favour. Woo hoo boat trip!!

Your Questions About Kayaking Magazine

Linda asks…

Umm, Why do I get rejected by non-model girls, but hit on by models?

Ok Ive been constantly rejected by girls who are regular non models that I want to go to the movies or comedy club or kayaking or dates with. Like massively rejected. Yet I hooked up with a legit Jcrew model last weekend and I've had some really really gorgeous girls hit on me in the past couple of weeks.

I have never had a girlfriend in my life and I am 21 years old.

I am brazilian and indian and I dont want to sound cocky but I dont know what it is. I'm not sure if its my looks because i get told a lot I am extremely good looking and all that stuff. I've had 17 magazine interview me for some section about guys. I've had like girls call me gorgeous or "beautiful" in the bars and stuff. I've had a random girl tell me I am so well put together I can attract gay guys and straight guys (weird compliment?).

Ok so I didnt want to sound cocky or arrogant but thats the looks part.

I usually get a girls number when I talk to one and talk them for like an hour. Theres this girl I approached after class which ends at 10:40 pm and we ended up talking for 2 hours outside and joking and laughing nonstop and I dropped her home and got her number recently. But then she gives me no signs in class? NOTHING? No signs and she usually texts back within like 2 minutes but I asked her what she was doing last night and she never replied.

Like I've gotten a bunch of models numbers and got with them before but now I want a relationship and I want an average looking girl with a BANGING personality. I find a couple but then they never give me signs or initiate or ANYTHING. I dont know wtf it is? And girls usually laugh at everything like I joke around all the time so I dont knowwwww what it is.

Hey I'm a model and I have a banging personality, not to toot my own horn but... ;) just kidding. Maybe some average girls find you too good looking and are maybe intimidated do you know what I mean? Girls assume that really good looking guys can be arrogant. Ask the girl out again or maybe just wait you never know she probably has a valid explanation for why she didn't get back to you. Anyways I hope my insight helps! Good luck I'm sure you'll find someone you deserve!

Maybe the girls are afraid of the competition and might have low confidence about themselves? It sounds like you've gained a bit of a reputation of 'hooking up' with really attractive girls, maybe the less attractive girls feel more intimidated and don't feel good enough for you? Just a suggestion :)

Brad Selers answers:

I think average looking girls are too intimidated by you and are trying to play hard to get to attract someone as attractive as you! Be the pursuer instead of the pursued!

Carol asks…

Umm, Why do I get rejected by average girls and hit on by models?

Ok Ive been constantly rejected by average looking girls I want to go to the movies or comedy club or kayaking or legit dates with. Like massively rejected. Yet I hooked up with a legit Jcrew model last weekend and I've had some really really gorgeous girls hit on me in the past couple of weeks.

Types of Kayak Trailers

The first and simplest form of kayak trailer is the: -

Single kayak Trailer

This trailer carries one kayak only. It uses rubberized steel suspension to counteract road bounces on the kayak. The trailer is easy to assemble and is made of aluminum, thus making it lightweight and durable. It is maintenance free and it can carry a kayak weighing up to 200 lbs.

You can also get other accessories for trailers like Trailer spare tires, front parking jack, Aluminum box for paddles and life jackets etc.

Multi kayak trailer:

Multi kayak trailer has epoxy-coated leaf springs to hold kayaks weighing up to 250 lbs. It is made up of aluminum and so it is also durable and lightweight. It is maintenance free and can be assembled very easily with a few simple tools. It has two center vertical supporters to carry multiple kayaks.

The two vertical risers can be placed at any point along the T bar. It has safety cables to keep your kayak safe. It also consists of high-speed wheels and tires. You can get similar accessories like the aluminum box, spare tires etc separately.

Trailex 16 kayak trailer:

This kayak trailer has supporting crossbars. The cross bars have cushioned vinyl extrusions to protect the kayak when being towed. The ends of the cross bars also have vinyl extrusions to prevent kayaks from damages while loading and unloading. It has epoxy-coated springs and safety cables. It also has an adjustable under carriage. It has a separate padded area for the paddles. The weight of this trailer is about 390 and it can hold a capacity load of up to 1200 lbs.

Rack and Roll kayak trailer:

This kayak trailer is the safest method for transporting kayaks. It is also made of aluminum to be durable and lightweight and it has loading bars to keep kayaks in place. Rack and roll trailers are far better than the roof rack method of carrying kayaks since they have aerodynamic capacity. They operate with less noise and they can improve the gas mileage. Another important advantage the rack and roll trailer has is that it can be folded and stored when not in use. Therefore it occupies less space. You can assemble and disassemble it within seconds.

AAA kayak trailer:

This # UKT4 model kayak trailer can carry 4 kayaks. It has rubber protective strips to prevent damages in kayaks. You can also get the storage box for the trailer separately. It has adjustable carrying arms to keep the kayaks safe. You can place two kayaks in the lower side and two on top. This kayak trailer can carry kayaks up to 12 inch long and 32 inches wide. The total load capacity of this trailer is 1200 lbs.

The advantages of aluminum kayak trailers are, aluminum is a very durable material and is noted for its lightness of weight. It weighs just fraction of steel yet it is stronger than steel. It has a rust resistance capacity and it will provide a longer life span. There is no need for maintenance. These are the main reasons why kayak trailers are built from aluminum.

Joseph asks…

I am an experienced canoer and would like to get into kayaking. What kayaks would you suggest?

I am looking for a recreational kayak moderatly priced. I am trying to stay away from major sporting good stores. DOes anyone have any companies that make a good kayak for flatwater recreational use or any other tips and advice.

Brad Selers answers:

Cobras are great

Sharon asks…

Going kayaking in a week. Any tips? What kind of camera should I have for it?

I'm going to be kayaking on the Salmon River in about a week and i would like to know what kind of camera would be a good one to bring. obviously it will have to be water proof, but i don't know which kind is best. Is it even possible to get good looking pictures while on a kayak? I guess in some of the more calm areas it will be. What other items would be smart to bring? I have no idea how to even kayak but they said they'd teach us everything so i'm not too worried about that, i just don't know what i should bring.

Brad Selers answers:

Olympus Stylus 850SW 8MP Digital Camera -

also bring bug spray, sun block, sun glasses, and lots of water.
Good luck and have fun.

Ken asks…

Any tips for taking a kayak out near an ocean?

Ive only kayaked a little and mostly creeks. Im at the mouth of the Chesapeake and was wondering about strong tides and currents. If you stay 25-50 feet from land what are the risks?

Brad Selers answers:

The previous advice is correct -- stay away from coastal and tidal zones until you have some instruction from an experienced sea kayaker AND you have the right equipment. You should know how to clear and re-enter a swamped, upset kayak, for one thing. Many people get into trouble every year taking recreational style short wide kayaks with large cockpits and no skeg or rudder into coastal waters. Flat bottomed rec boats track badly and can easily flip in strong waves. They also tend to ride high in the water so they are affected by strong winds. And they are difficult to paddle fast if you are caught in tides, strong current or offshore winds. Large cockpits can swamp easily, too, so a good sprayskirt is a necessity. Seaworthy kayaks are typically 12' to 18' long and less than 25" wide, with sealed bulkheads. It is also important that you know the navigation rules of shipping lanes if you are going to be in some areas of the Chesapeake.

Paul asks…

Do you usualy get soaked when your kayaking? And can kayaks tip over easily?

i wanna get into kayaking

Brad Selers answers:

It depends on the kayak. If you use the open type "sit on top" kayaks that some people use at the beach for surf paddling, you will get wet. And if you kayak white water rapids your upper body will often get wet from the spray of the waves.

But most kayaking on lakes and rivers is done in "closed boats" which have a small cockpit where you tuck your legs inside the boat. You wear a "spray skirt" around your waist, a stretchy neoprene cover that slips over the edge of the cockpit opening and keeps any splashed water from getting into the boat. Recreational kayaks, the sort that you will probably rent if you are a beginner, are very stable and not tippy.

More advanced kayaks, for racing or some types that people use in the ocean, tend to be more tippy but by the time a kayaker gets to a skill level of using those types they know how keep them stable or roll back up if they are flipped.

I kayak quite often in lakes and rivers. The only parts of me that get wet most of the time are my hands from the water that runs off the paddle and my feet, from wading in when I launch the boat.

Brad Selers answers:

No

John asks…

where can i get a kayak for under $250 in colmbus ohio?

Brad Selers answers:

Order one off of ebay or another online store. You can customize it to the price of your liking.

Joseph asks…

west virginia kayaking?

I live in Ohio and am getting bored of the flatness and openness, anyone know some good places in west virginia that rent kayaks? I'm looking at about class II rapids (intermediate). Kind of want somewhere with good hiking and camping too. Looking ahead to spring...

Brad Selers answers:

Most of the rivers I know about in WV are class IV and up (it's so mountainous) though there is plenty of good camping and hiking in the Monongahela National Forest. How about southwest PA? The Laurel Mountain area centered on Ohiopyle an hour east of Pittsburgh has the Youghiogheny River with some Class I to III sections and you can rent kayaks at a couple of outfitters. Lots of mountain biking, hiking and camping in the area, too, definitely a relief from pancake-flat Ohio.

Michael asks…

What is the best airline for childre age 12 and 16 to travel withOUT an adult?

I would like my niece and nephew to travel from Cleveland Ohio to San Diego this summer, but they will have to fly unaccompanied. What is the best airline -that charges the least amount of fees? I've been having trouble searching for tickets from kayak.com, expedia.com, orbitz.com, etc. because there will be no adult traveling with them. Thanks in advance for help!

Brad Selers answers:

I have flown alone several times. Out of all the times I did fly on my own I enjoyed Frontier the most

Sandra asks…

Should I drive with my plastic kayak hull up or hull down?

I usually drive with it hull up but I'm going on a longer trip from Ohio to Michigan and I want to know if this is the best way for a plastic kayak to ride on top of my SUV.

Brad Selers answers:

Down so the air flow pushes it against the roof and not lift if up beside if it rains the weight could do damage to the roof and make the car top heavy

Your Questions About Kayaking

Robert asks…

Whats the salary for whitewater kayaking guides?

I am just wondering how much a whitewater rafting/kayaking guide can make. Please indicate if its a seasonal salary or an annual salary.

Brad Selers answers:

It's almost always per-trip. A typical trip is $20-$50, depending on how long the run is. You can get in 1-2 trips per day. If you are lucky, you can get a tip from $5-$20 per passenger, but you can't count on it.

Work is definitely seasonal, and it's not consistent. It's also not that easy. This is not something that's easy to make a real career out of (even running a rafting company isn't very lucrative). It's really a labor of love for most people.

Paul asks…

what is the best company for kayaking and or camping equipment?

what is the best company for kayaking equipment.
also what is the best company for camping equipment.

Brad Selers answers:

Has some of the best camping and Kayaking equipment I have ever seen. All top of the line too, they are expensive but in most cases it is well worth the extra money.

Ken asks…

Where can I check water levels for kayaking?

I need to know what the water level is in the broad river in Georgia, for a kayaking trip.
Anyone know of a website?

Brad Selers answers:

Here is the best site for finding stream, creek and river levels. Oddly enough, it is brought to us by our governement (looks like they can do something right)

http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ga/nwis/rt/

This is the specific site for GA, but if you click on the usgs symbol on the upper left, it will take you to the main page, just click on the state on the map of the US and it will take you to the water monitor site for that state as well.

Happy paddling.

Sharon asks…

Where are the best places in New Zealand for sea or flat water kayaking?

I have the opportunity to spend several months in New Zealand next year (Jan - March). I'd like to do some kayaking both on in-land lakes and rivers or in coastal areas. My goal is to see the natural beauties of NZ. I'm not as interested in shooting down death-defying white water rapids. Any suggestions for the best destinations?

Brad Selers answers:

#1 spot is the Abel Tasman National Park, near Nelson. Top of the South Island

#2 Marlborough / Picton – The Marlborough Sounds - http://www.destinationmarlborough.com

#3 Queenstown – Milford Sounds, http://www.fiordland.org.nz

William asks…

Where do you go when you finish kayaking a stretch of river?

I know nothing about kayaking but I'm doing some research hopefully to plan a trip in a month or so.

One thing I cant find, because the answer might be too obvious, is what do you do once you finish paddling?
Your car might be 10 miles behind you. Do places offer some sort of shuttle or taxi? If so how much are they usually?
Would it be better to go in 2 cars and leave one car at the end of the route?
Forgot to mention, yeah I will be going in a group of 2-4, haven't decided on how many cars we will be taking

Brad Selers answers:

Whoa! Kayaking is a group sport. One safety rule states: Never kayak alone. A minimum group is three boats. In case of accident one boater can stay at the site or with the injured and the third can go for help. Trips are arranged from put-ins to take-outs. The usual practice is to put one car at the take-out and then use the second car to get back to the put-in. Some runs host commercial trips. And their drivers may offer rides back. I have known boaters to drop a bike off at the take-out and use it to get back to the car at the take-out. Please take a lesson or two...kayaking is a dangerous sport.

Hello

They mainly do trips down the Hillsborough River

Canoe Outpost

http://www.canoeingfun.com/

Again despite the name they do rent Kayaks as well
The mainly go down the Little Manatee River
but also do trips to Cockroach Bay (horrible name, nice paddling) & Braden River

Also, it's not in Hillsborough county
but
Fort Desoto does Kayak rentals

http://www.best-of-st-pete-beach.com/kayaking-fort-desoto-park.html

If your looking to do saltwater this is your best bet.

A lot of the state parks will also rent out kayaks if they have them.

Also check with outfitter stores and see who they suggest

http://www.billjacksons.com/kayaking.php

Make sure to have fun and Wear Sunscreen!!!!

George asks…

What is there to do indoors in Cleawater Beach and Saint Pete Beach Florida?

I will be in Florida 24th -28th. There is a hurricane coming so I am sure the weather is going to be crappy. What could I do inside for fun? Everything I had planned was outside: Scuba, snorkeling, hiking, kayaking. What should I do?
Hurricane Bill is headed near florida. Its on the Atlantic side but I figured it would still mess the weather up pretty bad for the gulf side.

Brad Selers answers:

Keep your plans for the outdoor activities. Even if there is a hurricane in the area. It is not guaranteed it will hit here. Most hurricane predictions cover a very large area and there will be plenty of time to adjust your plans if it does come your direction.

Lizzie asks…

do i need a freshwater fishing license in florida?

i want to go out to a lake and go fishing in my kayak. i live in florida and its obviously freshwater. if im going to catch and release do i need a fishing license? i know i need one if i keep the fish but i just want to catch and release. do i need a fishing license or not?

Brad Selers answers:

I don't know if the age is 16 or 18. You need a license to fish in Florida anywhere. Don't get caught without one. The penalties are very strict. One license covers both salt and fresh.

Robert asks…

Your Questions About Kayaking Tips

Michael asks…

Kayaking...advice or tips?

We just bought kayaks for Christmas.
Any advice on paddling techniques would be gratefully accepted. I have been out on the lake today, and came home a little frustrated.
The water was a little choppy from the ski boats whizzing by, and it was windy too.

Brad Selers answers:

Don't be frustrated-- you've only been out on the water for one day. Try to find a calmer venue for now while you're getting acquainted with your new boats, somewhere away from the boat wakes and on a day with no wind. And definitely go take a lesson. Besides getting essential safety training, you'll pick up a lot more technique working interactively with an instructor than trying to figure things out on your own.

Sandy asks…

Tips on kayaking. Thanks!?

There are A LOT of leopard sharks around the area and I know they are totally harmless but my mom is still frightened. Thanks again!

Brad Selers answers:

I assume you are talking about sea kayaking, the odds of you being attacked by a shark in a kayak are less than being struck by lightning. Paddling in open water you should develop an awareness of your surroundings, meaning developing your paddling skills and as well learning all you can about the marine animals and marine mammals in the area you are paddling. There are certain things you can do as well to lessen an encounter in open water that would aid in lessening a possible chance encounter. Sharks primarily fed at early morning and early sunset. As well most sharks seem to fed more so at night. You can avoid shark encounters in most waters by staying well clear of fishing boats and piers. Especially when fishing piers seem to have more than an abundance of "chum" in the water to attract different species of fish.
I have paddled all over the world, and on more than one time seen the distinctive fin of different sharks on different waters. Remaining calm, paddle away from the area cautiously and with a watchful eye to the species you see. Sharks are by nature curious but I have yet to hear of an kayaker being attacked by leopard sharks. In fact the only attack I have ever heard of was one in Africa 2250 miles up the Zambezi river by Mud Sharks.having paddled with sand tiger sharks, mud sharks, and reportedly areas where great whites exist I have yet to have a dangerous encounter. As a diver, I have dove with sharks and studied them in awe.
Primarily I love paddling the Atlantic, and i think the concern should be developing skills for open water and remember that you should never paddle alone, equip yourself with the proper emergency equipment to recover from an upset, carry a marine band radio, you may want to look into purchasing a "SPOT" Satellite Emergency device .(Findmespot.com) and as well , know that even the most experienced paddlers are sometimes called upon to re-enter their kayaks after an upset.
Study the tides and charts, weather reports, learn to read the water, the waves winds and currents, weather indicators. Enjoy your paddling and as well I hope you will share your paddling experiences here with us, Enjoy..........................

Charles asks…

Does anybody have any tips, lists or ideas on what to bring while kayak fishing in the bays near the gulf?

I live in a town that is about 10 minutes away from Freeport where there are so many saltwater bays right by the Gulf of Mexico. I just bought a Kayak and I would like some ideas or tips or lists on what to bring on a kayak fishing trip. My main target fish are Redfish and Trout.

Brad Selers answers:

Rod, reel and lures, paddle and life jacket, sunscreen and suntan lotion, water, food, and a fish stringer. Add a large brim hat and sun shades and you're ready to fish.Sounds like you're going to have a lot of fun.

Helen asks…

Tips on Ocean Kayaking?

Brad Selers answers:

Take lessons, carry appropriate rescue gear, don't go out in bad weather, learn good paddling skills, don't depend on the steerable rudder to turn your craft, wear an immersion suit, carry a pump or bailing bucket and sponge, carry a cell phone in a sealed plastic bag, always wear your PFD, don't offset your paddles (this is only for racing), use a craft that is no longer than you need, try a sit on top kayak as they are basically unsinkable (except for the ones with storage hatches that could come loose) and it compels you to wear an immersion suit, and if you go over it's bum first, feet last to get back on, and finally, tell someone where you are going and when you will be coming back, and try not to make long open crossings where you can't see the shore. Oh yeah, one more thing, obtain and learn how to use a GPS system and keep it in a sealed plastic container.
